Artist Point now open

The Washington State Department of Transportation has done it again! For the second straight year, crews have cleared the Mt. Baker Highway all the way to its terminus at Artist Point by July 1, one of the earliest ever openings of the site known for breathtaking scenery.

Clearing efforts began on May 27, and WSDOT crews encountered snow 20-40 feet deep along the way. Snowblowers, plows and bulldozers cleared the road, creating canyons through snow that still remain in sections along the 2.7 miles of road past the ski area to Artist Point.

Artist Point is a popular destination for sightseers and hikers in the summer. With 360-degree views of Mt. Baker and Mt. Shuksan, the parking lot sits at 5,000 feet above sea level and provides access to numerous trails and viewpoints. Winter snows reclaim the site early in the fall. Last year, Artist Point closed on September 30th.

Visitors must display a valid Recreation Pass for U.S. Fee Areas (WA Discover Pass is not honored). Call the Glacier Public Service Center to learn more: 360/599-2714. For more information about Artist Point and incredible photos of the clearing process, click here: wsdot.wa.gov
