2014 Legendary Banked Slalom at Mt. Baker Ski Area

Screen Shot 2014-02-10 at 12.47.45 PM

The results are in! First, some notes about how the race went down this year...

For the first time ever, the Legendary Banked Slalom course extended to the top of Chair 8. While the reasons behind the move were unfortunate (not enough snow to extend the race down to the "Toilet Bowl" turn), the results were pretty cool. Mountain personnel dug a trench with an excavator, then built a bridge with 2x6s and covered it with snow so that people disembarking from Chair 5 could ski over the course and competitors had to snowboard under the bridge through a tunnel. The bridge made for a great photographer's perch and the tunnel was apparently an added challenge to an already tough course.

A couple guys I met on Chair 8 who just missed getting into the finals said the transition from the flowy top of the course to the middle section was like hitting a reset button, because the course went uphill through the tunnel and racers couldn't see what was on the other side. As always, the race was exciting to watch – hero turns with a healthy dose of spills, and plenty of cheering from the peanut gallery.
