100 MILES FOR 100 YEARS OF SUFFRAGE
Bellingham, Wash.- July 1st, 2020 – September 30th, 2020
Join Shifting Gears and the WA Historical Society in celebrating the 100th year of the Suffrage Movement and the power of the bicycle to initiate change.
2020 marks 100 years since the 19th Amendment was enacted, and in honor of this significant historical marker, Shifting Gears is hosting “100 Miles for 100 Years of Suffrage.” The program features the bicycle as a vehicle to honor and remember the achievements of the Suffragists by encouraging womxn and their friends, family members and allies to ‘ride a mile for every year of the Suffragist Movement’ between July 1st and September 30th.
“100 miles is a lot of ground to cover!” says Shifting Gears’ Board Member, Taylor Sinason. “Participants can take on the challenge on their own, or join as a team. You don’t have to ride a 100 miles in one day- you can work towards your goal over a period of time. The idea is to encourage all people outside of their comfort zone in a way that is challenging yet supportive and remind people that the fight for equity is on-going.”
With the World Health Pandemic – COVID19, Shifting Gears is encouraging all participants to recreate responsibly, keep their physical distance, wear a mask when passing other bicycles or runners and where possible only recreate with people from the same household.
Cost to enter is $15, with scholarships available for those who cannot afford the entry fee. For every 10 miles completed, riders will receive an inspiring card featuring a Washingtonian Suffragist. Collect 10 cards and the rider will be entered into a drawing on October 3rd, 2020 for a unique package donated by local and national companies.
In addition to the inspirational collectible cards, the $15 entry fee includes access to Shifting Gears’ private club on Ride with GPS as well as to a private Facebook Group where you will have access to route and opportunities to share rides with other participants. For an additional fee you can add a t-shirt commemorating your support of the Suffrage Movement, Shifting Gears and your riding achievements.
