Bioluminescence Sea Kayak Group Paddle
Sep 3, 2016 @ 7:45 pm - 9:45 pm$65
What is Bioluminescence?! Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism. Bioluminescent creatures are found throughout marine habitats, from the ocean surface to the deep sea floor. The light emitted by a bioluminescent organism is produced by energy released from chemical reactions occurring inside (or ejected by) the organism. If you’ve ever seen a firefly, you have encountered a bioluminescent organism. In the ocean, bioluminescence is not as rare as you might think. In fact, most types of animals, from bacteria to sharks, include some bioluminescent members. While the functions of bioluminescence are not known for all animals, typically bioluminescence is used to warn or evade predators), to lure or detect prey, for communication between members of the same species.
Our group outings are a mix of fun on the water, socializing, and basic skills instruction. All participants will be on our tandem sea kayaks, which are incredibly stable boats for new or novice paddlers. We’ll provide instruction on entering/exiting, fitting, and maneuvering the boat, but the focus is the on-water experience. Our guides are experienced kayakers with knowledge of the local area, the skills to keep you safe, and plenty of experiences to learn from. Each guided evening paddle is three hours from start to finish with a break sometime in the middle. We’ll provide light snacks but please bring water and any personal snacks you’ll want. If you’ve never been on Bellingham Bay or in a kayak, this is a great introduction to both!
