Whatcom Events, the organization that manages Ski to Sea, recently announced Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition (WMBC) will be the beneficiary of proceeds from this year's Tour de Whatcom.
Tour de Whatcom, a non-competitive summer ride through Whatcom County with 25-mile, 50-mile and 105-mile courses, has run for seven years, but 2013 will be the first year Whatcom Events has managed it. Last year, the event raised over $20,000 which was given to The Bike Shop, other local groups and high schools. This year's Tour de Whatcom is July 27. Every year WMBC coordinates hundreds of volunteers who put in thousands of volunteer hours building, cleaning and maintaining trails in Whatcom County. According to their website, they involve youth from area schools, Lummi Nation and Boy Scouts of America, and advocate for trail access. Many WMBC members advocated for the recent reconveyance of 8,000 acres of DNR land to Whatcom County for the future creation of a county park.
“We are grateful to be the beneficiary of proceeds from the Tour De Whatcom and to Whatcom Events for recognizing our organization," said WMBC President Matt Durand. "Without all of the dedicated community members contributing to this organization over the years, we wouldn't have the 50+ miles of mountain biking trails we currently have access to. This enables our organization to continue growing and seize on opportunities that are paramount to making Whatcom County a world class recreation destination."
Whatcom Events also manages Muds to Suds, an obstacle course and mud race in its second year at Hovander Park in Ferndale. Muds to Suds 2013 is scheduled for August 24 and 25. Info: mudstosuds.com
